Rams Club Honors John & Sharie Montgomery With Endowment Naming

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Honoring their extraordinary impact on Carolina Athletics, Tar Heel student-athletes and the Carolina community, The Rams Club has named the Carolina Excellence Endowment in honor of John and Sharie Montgomery. The John & Sharie Montgomery Excellence Endowment will provide long-term, flexible funding that supports scholarship needs beyond the existing Scholarship Endowment Trust and equips The Rams Club to address emerging opportunities for Carolina Athletics.
John Montgomery announced his retirement earlier this year as Executive Director of The Rams Club. His passion for Carolina, knowledge and skill in athletic fundraising and unwavering trust in The Rams Club's mission and staff strengthened the organization in his 24 years as its leader. During his tenure, Rams Club donors made gifts of more than $1.2 billion to support Carolina student-athletes. The Rams Club also achieved a record membership of over 22,000 during that time.
Montgomery believed in fostering long-term philanthropic relationships and creating new avenues of giving. A significant area of growth for The Rams Club occurred in endowment giving – through the Scholarship Endowment, individual sport endowments and a new unrestricted endowment launched in November 2024 to meet the needs of Carolina Athletics today and well into the future.
"The Rams Club under John's leadership has long shared Carolina's commitment to excellence – which is why naming the Excellence Endowment for John and Sharie is so appropriate," said Carolina Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "Their commitment to raising money for scholarships, facilities and national-championship experiences for student-athletes continues to resonate, and this endowment, like John and Sharie, will continue to make a lasting impact."
John and Sharie Montgomery have been fixtures in the Carolina community since 2001. From the beginning of their time in Chapel Hill, they built relationships with supporters, coaches, staff and student-athletes. They have invested in the experience of thousands of Tar Heels, ensuring they have the necessary resources to achieve excellence as athletes, students and members of the community.
"John and Sharie's impact on Carolina Athletics cannot be overstated," said Rams Club Executive Director Seth Reeves. "Their passion, generosity and unwavering belief in our mission have touched every corner of this place. John has led The Rams Club with vision and heart, building something truly special. I've been lucky to call him a mentor and friend, and I'm deeply grateful for the wisdom and care he's poured into all of us."
