No.11 WBB Rolls Past Fairfield In Las Vegas
November 15, 2025 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – In its final game out west at the WBCA Challenge, No. 11 North Carolina women's basketball withstood a pesky Fairfield squad to come away with an 82-68 victory on Saturday afternoon from Michelob Ultra Arena. In a career-high afternoon, Laila Hull led the Tar Heels with 14 points.
North Carolina (3-1) earned its seventh consecutive win over an unranked opponent on a neutral court in its victory over Fairfield (3-1), as the Tar Heels leave Las Vegas even at 1-1.
Hull led the Tar Heels with 14 points to match her career-high and was dangerous beyond the arc with four triples. Four other Tar Heels joined her in double-figures with Nyla Brooks, Nyla Harris and Ciera Toomey each scoring 12 points. Riding a four-game streak posting double-figures, Indya Nivar added 10 points.
Distributing the ball at an efficient rate, Lanie Grant led UNC with a career-high four assists. Nivar continues on a defensive tear, adding four steals, while Harris paced Carolina off the glass with seven rebounds.
Defense proved to be a focal point early on, with points coming at a premium in the opening minutes. With Nivar in early foul trouble, Carolina relied on its reserves to come in and fill the gap. As Fairfield's offense found its groove off an 11-0 run, the Tar Heels found themselves trailing through one for the first time this year at 19-11.
With Nivar back in the game, it sparked Carolina to make up ground at the start of the second quarter and close the gap on the Stags. A 15-0 Tar Heel run gave UNC a nine-point lead nearing the break. Forcing the Stags to cough up the ball, Carolina capitalized on miscues with 16 points off turnovers in the first half to lead 37-25 through two.
The Stags knocked down multiple triples to cut the Carolina lead to four, less than two minutes into the third quarter. Carolina began to trade threes' right back to keep the Stags at arms' length. Taking off on a quick 12-0 run, the Tar Heels took control to build their lead up to 14 and remain ahead at 59-45 with 10 minutes remaining.
In a collective team effort, Carolina pounded the paint to go ahead by as many as 25 in the fourth. Brooks and Toomey continued to pour it on, each scoring seven in the final frame. Carolina's defense proved to be too much for the Stags, with the Tar Heels running away with the 82-68 victory in Sin City.
The Tar Heels return to North Carolina next week, taking a short trip up the road to play at N.C. A&T on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Thursday night tilt can be caught on FloCollege at 7 p.m. ET. Fans can catch Carolina back in Carmichael, next Sunday on Nov. 23 as the Tar Heels host UNCG at 6 p.m. ET.Â
