GREENSBORO, N.C. – Taking on its first true road environment of the season, No. 14 North Carolina women's basketball rolled to an 85-50 victory over N.C. A&T from Corbett Sports Center on Thursday night. The 35-point victory marked the largest road win for the Tar Heels since 2021.
Draining a season-high 12 threes, North Carolina (4-1) held N.C. A&T (2-4) to 36.4% from the field to win its 10th game out of its last 11 on the road. Indya Nivar continues to emerge as a leader for this young Tar Heel squad, scoring a season-high 14 points and leading the team with 10 rebounds. It marks her second career double-double as she rides a career-high streak of five games in double-figure scoring.
Leading the charge from deep, Nyla Brooks knocked down a career-high four triples en route to matching Nivar with a game leading 14 points. The freshman also snagged a career-best five rebounds.
Elina Aarnisalo was extremely efficient from the field, going 6-of-8 en route to 13 points. Toomey also posted a double-figure night, adding 12 points. Overall, 10 Tar Heels made their way to the basket.
Aarnisalo came ready to play, stacking up a quick six points in the opening five minutes of the night. Holding the Aggies to a scoreless stretch throughout the first quarter, Carolina asserted itself to run out and grab the lead at 14-8.
As the Tar Heels began to find their footing from beyond the arc, Brooks made her presence known with four triples alone in the first half. Carolina's defense stifled the Aggies, cashing in turnovers for points to build up its lead. Knocking down nine threes as a squad to match its game-high within the first 20-minutes, Carolina ran off to the locker room with a 43-21 advantage.
Not slowing down, Carolina came out to start the second half on a 13-2 run. Stuffing the stat sheet, the Tar Heels eclipsed double-digit steals for the third game this season as Nivar led the defensive charge. Going on to outscore the Aggies 26-12 in the third, Carolina padded its hold to 69-33 through three.
With a younger core hitting the court for the Tar Heels, Jordan Zubich put up five points in the final quarter to tie her career-high of eight. As Carolina maintained its advantage, it was able to hold on to earn its largest win on the road since 2021 by defeating N.C. A&T, 85-50.
