Two Doubles Teams Advance In Men's ITA Regional

CARY, N.C.—Two University of North Carolina doubles teams advanced at the men's ITA Carolina's Regional on Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park, inching closer to qualifying for next month's NCAA Doubles Championship in Orlando.
The freshman duo of Kase Schinnerer and Ian Mayew swept a pair of matches on Sunday, continuing their hot run and advancing to Monday's doubles main draw final. Schinnerer and Mayew survived two match points and outlasted Clemson's Henrik Bladelius and Viktor Markov, 8-7 (10) in a marathon quarterfinal.
In the semifinal, Schinnerer and Mayew came from behind to top UNCW's Romain Gales and Edoardo Chérié Ligniére by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6). The winner of Monday's final earns a berth in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
Also in the doubles bracket, Chris Xu and Niels Ratiu beat Clemson's Romain Gales and Edoardo Chérié Ligniére 8-6 in the quarterfinals to reach Monday's 10 a.m. semifinal match. Xu and Ratiu will face the weekend's No. 2 seed and 74th-ranked duo, South Carolina's Max Stenzer and Sean Daryabeigi, in the semis. Stenzer and Daryabeigi defeated UNC's Nick Mangiapane and Logan Zapp 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
Roan Jones' run in the singles main draw came to an end in quarterfinals when Wake Forest's Luca Pow topped the senior 6-3, 7-6 (8).
