Myrtle Walks Off Notre Dame To Clinch Series Victory
March 30, 2024 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team (24-9, 6-6 ACC) earned its third series win of the season on Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion in Anderson Stadium.
Junior Carlie Myrtle walked off Notre Dame in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out RBI double to take the 4-3 victory and clinch the 2-1 series victory over the Irish.
It's the Tar Heels' first series win over the Irish (21-12, 6-6 ACC) since 2018.
After trailing the Irish 2-0 after the top of the first, Carolina was held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases with no outs, graduate Lexi Godwin plated the first two Carolina runs with a two-RBI single that scored graduate Destiny Middleton and senior Aneshia Jordan.
Junior Alex Coleman then gave the Tar Heels a 3-2 lead with an RBI groundout that scored freshman Kate Bubela.
The Irish were able to tie up the game at three-all in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI double.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth for Carolina, Nikki Harris entered the circle for the Tar Heels in the top of the seventh, replacing starting pitcher Kenna Raye Dark.
Harris then set down the Irish in order, including a strikeout to end the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, redshirt sophomore Isabela Emerling tallied a two-out single and was pinch ran for by Abby Settlemyre before Myrtle tallied the walkoff double.
Myrtle hit a team-best .625 against the Irish, going 5-of-8 at the plate with two RBI, a double and a hit-by-pitch.
The Tar Heels are now 18-5 on the season at home.
Carolina will return home on Wednesday to host UNCW at 5 p.m.
