Swim & Dive Falls In ACC Tri-Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – North Carolina recorded 12 top-three finishes, including a win by Louis Dramm in the men's 400 IM and Aranza Vazquez in the women's 1-meter diving competition, but Virginia and NC State swept the Tar Heels in the conclusion of a two-day dual meet Saturday afternoon.
"This weekend our team competed against some of the best swimmers in the world and I am extremely proud of how they represented themselves and our university," UNC head coach Mark Gangloff said. "We have a lot to look forward to as we prepare for the ACC and NCAA Championships."
The UNC men dropped to 4-2 in dual competition, with their 258-93 loss to No. 4 NC State and 222-131 loss to No. 18 Virginia. The No. 20 North Carolina women fell to 3-2-1 following their 272.5-80.5 loss at No. 1 Virginia and 196-157 loss to No. 8 NC State.
Dramm posted a season-best NCAA B qualifying mark of 3:44.41 in his 400 IM triumph, touching 2.27 seconds ahead of the field. He missed sweeping the IM events by 0.14 seconds and finished second in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 1:46.90. He also registered a season-best time in the 100 freestyle (44.01).
Senior Ellie VanNote placed second in the women's 200 fly with a time of 1:58.73 and later finished fourth in the 100 fly.
Freshman Ben Delmar placed second in the 200 breaststroke, finishing just 0.65 seconds out of first with a time of 1:56.80. He also recorded a personal best and NCAA B qualifying time (3:49.12) in the 400 IM to finish fourth.
Delmar and Skyler Smith each finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke, missing out on a podium by the slimmest of margins. Smith was 0.03 seconds from a third-place finish in the women's race, while Delmar was only 0.10 seconds out on the men's side.
Seniors Patrick Hussey, Boyd Poelke, and freshman Sebastian Lunak recorded a third-place finish for the UNC men. Hussey took the bronze in the 500 freestyle, Lunak in the 200 fly, and Poelke in the 100 fly.
Sophomore Lily Reader came home third in the women's 500 freestyle.
Vazquez and freshman Ellie Joyce finished first and third in the women's 1-meter diving competition after Vazquez earned runner-up status in the 3-meter.
Vazquez's younger brother, Rodolfo, earned third place in the men's 1-meter diving event.
The Tar Heels will wrap up their dual meet season on Friday, Jan. 26, at Duke.
