Women's Golf Has Record Day In Final Round At Pullman Regional

Tar Heel freshman Inez Ng shot a 5-under-par 67 and the University of North Carolina women's golf team shot 12-under 276 Wednesday to tie the best round in school history on the final day of the 2023 NCAA Pullman Regional at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

Ng, playing in her first tournament of the spring and third as a Tar Heel, finished one stroke off the best round in Carolina's NCAA regionals history, a 66 by Ashley Prange in the second round in 2003.

Ng made six birdies and only one bogey, which came on her final hole of the round to earn a share of 17^th place. The Singapore native carded a pair of birdies on her first nine holes, then birdied her 13^th, 15^th, 16^th and 17^th holes before making a 6 to close her round at 67, which tied the sixth best round of the day.

Carolina freshman Megan Streicher finished 12^th at 7-under 209 with three straight rounds below par (68-71-70). Her 7-under score to par and 209 total equal the best ever by a Tar Heel in an NCAA regional with Meaghan Francella in 2004 and Catherine O'Donnell in 2012.

The Tar Heels tied their school record for the low round ever today with the 12-under 276 they shot earlier this spring in the third round at the MountainView Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.

Carolina's previous low round in an NCAA regional was 280 in the third round in 2007 in Baton Rouge, La.

UNC finished the 54-hole Pullman Regional ninth in the 12-team field at 1-over 865. The 1-over finish is the second best in UNC history in a regional and the best since 2007.

Number-one ranked Stanford shot 50-under 814 to win the regional by 17 strokes over ACC champion Clemson (-33). Southern California (-26), Baylor (-23) and Texas Tech (-19) rounded out the top five, who advance to the NCAA Championship May 19-24 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Carolina shot the fifth-best round of the final day, trailing only Clemson (-18), Kentucky (-17), Stanford (-15) and USC (-13).

Stanford's Rose Zhang, the top-ranked amateur in the world, won the individual title, her seventh of the season, with a final-round 65 and a 19-under 197 total (64-68-65).

UC-Riverside's Tiffany Le placed third at 14 under to earn the individual spot in the NCAA Championship.

Carolina junior Natalia Aseguinolaza shot a season-low 69, one off her career best and tied for 52^nd at 7-over 223.

Sophomore Riley Quartermain, subbing for the first time this week in the regional due to an injury to two-time All-ACC senior Kayla Smith, made four birdies and only two bogeys for a career-best 70.

"Today was our best round of the year, especially considering we played that well without two starters in Kayla and Krista Junkkari," says head coach Aimee Neff. "They have the two lowest scoring averages in UNC history so for this lineup, with two freshmen and a sophomore, to play this well is exciting for the future of our program. Megan (Streicher) hit 17 greens today; Inez was so calm, cool and confident and made it look easy.

"I am very proud of Megan and Inez to finish in the top 20 in their first regional. Plus Natalia shot 3 under today, her best round of the year, and Riley subbed in great for Kayla with a career-best 70."
