Softball Suffers One-Run Loss To JMU, 6-5

Carlie Myrtle hit her first career home run, plating two runs, while Kiersten Licea and Bri Stubbs each went a team-best 2-of-3 from the plate in the loss. Licea had two doubles on the day.
The Tar Heels got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Destiny Middleton opened the game with a double, advancing on a base hit from Bri Stubbs, before stealing home to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.
JMU evened it up in the top of the second, scoring on a throwing error, making it 1-1. The Dukes then hit three home runs, one in the top of the third, fourth and fifth, to take a 5-1 lead.
Carolina tied it up again in the bottom of the sixth, plating three runs on three hits, one from each Lexi Godwin, Licea and a two-run home run from Myrtle.
JMU took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, hitting their fourth home run of the game.
Kenna Raye Dark, who started the game, allowed four runs, three earned and five hits in four innings. Talia Hannappel, who went two innings, and Lilli Backes, who pitched the top of the seventh, each allowed two hits and one earned run.
Up next, the Tar Heels travel to App State on March 8 for a 6 p.m. matchup in Boone.
