Softball Drops Doubleheader To JMU And Purdue

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team fell to JMU and Purdue in a doubleheader on the second day of the Carolina Classic. JMU opened the day with a 7-1 victory over the Tar Heels, while Purdue earned a 4-0 win over Carolina in a rematch from Friday.
Despite tallying 15 hits on the day, the Tar Heels struggled to plate runs, leaving 18 on base between the two games.
Bri Stubbs led Carolina at the plate with a team-best five hits on the day in eight at-bats, including going 3-of-4 against the Boilermakers. Skyler Brooks and Kiersten Licea each had a pair of hits, with Brooks tallying the sole Tar Heel RBI which came against Purdue.
Lilli Backes (3-6), who started both games in the circle, pitched nine of the 14 innings on Saturday, allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts. Talia Hannappel, Carlie Myrtle, Bailey McCachren and Kenna Raye Dark combined to pitch the remaining five innings, with Hannappel pitching a season-high three innings against the Dukes.
With the two losses, Carolina falls to 8-12 on the season, while Purdue improves to 10-6 and JMU moves to 9-4.
The Tar Heels will finish off the weekend with a 1:30 p.m. rematch against JMU on Sunday in the final game of the Carolina Classic.
