Women's Tennis Wins 4-2 over Texas A&M, Headed to ITA Championship Match

Seattle, Wash. – The Tar Heels are headed to the Championship Match! No. 2 Carolina earned a 4-2 victory over No. 3 Texas A&M in the Semifinals of the 2023 ITA Division I National Women's Team Indoor Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
For the first time this season, the Tar Heels dropped the doubles point as the No. 3 Branstine/Stoiana from Texas A&M defeated Brantmeier/Scotty 6-1. The Texas A&M pairing of Ewing/Goldsmith defeated Crawley/Tanguilig 6-3 to clinch the 1-0 lead for the Aggies.
The Heels got on the scoreboard as No. 1 Fiona Crawley defeated Carson Branstine 6-4, 6-1. Then the Aggies got point 2 with Daria Smetannikov def. No. 18 Anika Yarlagadda 6-1, 2-6, 6-0, but it was freshman Reese Brantmeier who tied the match at 2-all as she defeated No. 5 Mary Stoiana 7-6 (7-6), 5-4.
The Heels then went up 3-2 in the match behind Elizabeth Scotty taking down No. 59 Jayci Goldsmith 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Carolina clinched the match as Carson Tanguilig defeated Salma Ewing 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 (7-2) to send UNC to Monday's Championship Match.
With the 4-2 win, Carolina advances to the ITA National Women's Team Indoor National Championship match for the eleventh time in school history.
The Heels will battle Georgia at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Washington on Monday, Feb. 13 at approximately 3 P.M. ET (12 P.M. PT). The Bulldogs knocked off Iowa State, 4-2 during Sunday afternoon's national semifinal match. The Bulldogs and the Tar Heels squared off already this season, as Georgia made the trip to Chapel Hill for the Feb. 1 match, in which Carolina won, 5-2.
The Tar Heels have made the 2023 ITA Division I National Women's Team Indoor finals for the ninth straight year, dating back to 2015.
