December 5, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team returns to action against an in-state rival on Wednesday, hosting UNC Greensboro for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Carmichael Arena.
Tickets are available here and at the door. UNC students and staff are free with a UNC One Card.
The game will air live on ACCNX.
UNC is 5-3 on the season and ranked No. 24 in this week's poll. UNCG comes in at 6-2.
Tar Heels vs. Spartans
The Tar Heels and Spartans will face off Wednesday for the 13th time in program history. Carolina has won all 12 of the previous meetings.
• The teams last met during the 2020-21 season, with UNC winning 96-35 on Nov. 28, 2020, in Chapel Hill. In the Covid-impacted season, that game was the second at UNC for then-freshmen Deja Kelly, Anya Poole and Alyssa Ustby. Poole came off the bench to lead all scorers with 15 points in just 14:38 of playing time.
• The UNCG matchup is UNC's second consecutive game against a team ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense. South Carolina came into the Nov. 30 matchup giving up 48.8 ppg, the lowest in the nation. The Spartans are allowing 51.2 ppg, which ranks ninth.
Tar Heel Ties
The Spartan coaching staff includes two former Carolina players: Cetera DeGraffenreid, the team's associate head coach, lettered for the Tar Heels from 2008-11 and still ranks third in program history in career assists and steals. She played professionally in Israel before starting her coaching career at Gardner-Webb, and she is now in her sixth season with the Spartans. Assistant coach Alex Miller played for the Tar Heels from 2005-09, a span during which the team made two Final Four appearances and finished in the Elite Eight on two other occasions. She is in her fourth season at UNCG.
Another Spartan assistant, Fred Applin, was an assistant coach at UNC from 1988-1993. A former head coach at Hampton and Charleston Southern, he is in his first year with the Spartans.
