WBB Hosts Davidson Sunday At 6
November 11, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC women's basketball team returns to the Carmichael Arena court Sunday evening to host a second-straight in-state opponent, this one the Davidson Wildcats. Tipoff against the Wildcats, who are coming off a win over another Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, is 6 p.m.
The No. 16 Tar Heels (1-0) opened the season on Wednesday with a 102-49 win over Gardner-Webb. The Wildcats (2-0) beat Wake Forest 57-52 at home on Saturday.
Heels vs. Wildcats
Sunday's meeting is the fifth between North Carolina and Davidson and the first in more than a decade. The teams last met in the 2012-13 season opener, with UNC winning 70-59 at home on Nov. 9, 2012. The game was part of the Preseason WNIT
• Three of the four previous meetings have taken place in Chapel Hill.
• The first-ever matchup with Davidson came in UNC's first season of competition as a varsity sport under the umbrella of the Department of Athletics and is the only one to have been hosted by Davidson. That game, on Feb. 15, 1975, was UNC's 13th of the season and part of a 14-game winning streak to start the year. With coach Angela Lumpkin at the Carolina helm, UNC finished the year 15-3. (Women's basketball became a varsity program at UNC in 1971-72 but was part of the Physical Education Department until the 1974-75 season, when it became part of the Department of Athletics.)
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson arrives in Chapel Hill as part of a busy stretch of competition against Atlantic Coast Conference teams. The Wildcats hosted Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon and earned a 57-52 victory. After the trip to Chapel Hill, the Wildcats will play at Duke on Thursday.
• Davidson opened the season on Nov. 7 at home against USC Upstate, winning 86-51. The team shot 50.9 percent from the field and were led in scoring by Virginia Tech transfer Charlise Dunn with 17 points.
