Men's Tennis Blanks Notre Dame, 4-0, For Key Win
March 27, 2022 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina men's tennis team, ranked No. 24 in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, picked up another important victory on Sunday afternoon, blanking No. 23 Notre Dame, 4-0, on a windy, chilly afternoon at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
The Tar Heels picked up their second win of the weekend over a ranked opponent after beating No. 29 Louisville, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.
UNC has won five of its last six matches and improved to 11-6, 6-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Fighting Irish fell to 14-7, 4-3.
The Tar Heels took the doubles point to begin the afternoon. Benjamin Sigouin and Peter Murphy beat Aditya Vashistha and Matthew Che, 6-2 at No. 3. Logan Zapp and Casey Kania clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 at No. 2 over Peter Conklin and Connor Fu.
Brian Cernoch won the first singles decision of the day, taking a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Vashistha to expand Carolina's lead to 2-0. Shortly thereafter, Mac Kiger made it 3-0 Carolina by posting a 7-5, 6-1 win over Fu at No. 3 singles.
Murphy won the clinching match at No. 6, topping Brian Bilsey by a 6-4. 6-4 score.
"I'm really proud of our guys," UNC head coach Sam Paul said afterward. "Notre Dame is a good team, ranked No. 23 in the country, and we had to be at our best today to win. It was awesome to play in front of our fans here at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club, which has been such a good host for us this Spring. We're playing well and need to keep our momentum going as we come down the stretch in the regular season. This was a big weekend for us with wins over two quality opponents."
Carolina will return to action with their final two home matches of the regular season next weekend, beginning with Clemson on Friday April 1 at 4:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
