Junkkari's 69 Leads Carolina In Final Round In Mesa

Smith 13th, Junkkari 19th in Final Standings
Krista Junkkari eagled the 18th hole to shot 3-under-par 69 and Kayla Smith shot a 70 on Sunday to earn a pair of top-20 individual finishes and lead the University of North Carolina to a seventh-place tie at the Clover Cup hosted by Notre Dame in Mesa, Ariz.
"We improved a little bit better each day," says head coach Aimee Neff of the Tar Heels who shot 292-290-289 over the three rounds. "Some of the best news is our girls are pretty upset even though they played well, and that's good. Kayla shot 70 today and she felt she had a lot more in her than her score.
"Our best golf is still ahead of us," says Neff. "We're slowly chipping away at it. It's good to see us progress each day and see some red numbers, as well. This is certainly a tournament that we're going to use to build confidence. We just want to keep trending positive as we head towards the postseason."
Smith tied for 13th at 3-under 213 shooting rounds of 71-72-70. Junkkari tied for 19th after two rounds of 73 and today's 69.
"I was certainly happy to see both KJ (Junkkari) and Kayla finish in the top 20," adds Neff. "There was a lot of good golf today and also a healthy level of frustration of knowing we could have done better. We left a few shots out there and know we can play even better than what we've played so far."
Nicole Adam tied for 40th (6-over 222) after a final round 78, but shot even-par 72 in each of the first two rounds. Freshman Stephany Kim shot her second straight 73 and tied for 45th (8-over 224).
Clemson won the team title Sunday at the Longbow Golf Club. The Tigers shot 12 under today to finish 18-under 846, five strokes ahead of Texas A&M, which was 14 under in the final round. LSU (-8) was third, Kentucky (-1) and TCU (-1) tied for fourth and Georgia (+2) was fifth. UNC and New Mexico tied for seventh at 7 over.
LSU's Ingrid Lundblad was medalist at 13-under 203.
Carolina returns to competition April 3-4 at the Wolfpack Match Play at NC State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
