Wrestling Ready for Opening Weekend

CHAPEL HILL – The 16th ranked North Carolina wrestling team (0-0 overall; 0-0 ACC) begins the 2022-2023 match season with a pair of duals at unique locations—both of which are first of their kind for the Tar Heels. Carolina will kick off dual season on Nov. 11 against Campbell University at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., then return to Chapel Hill for Opening Day at Boshamer Stadium (home to Carolina Baseball) on Nov. 13 versus the University of Michigan.

Clay Lautt took second place at 174 pounds on Saturday as North Carolina began the 2022-23 season with a strong performance at the Southeast Open at the Cregger Center on the Roanoke College campus.
Tar Heels reached at least the semifinals in eight of 10 weight classes in the Open Division.
Three UNC grapplers took third place in their respective weight classes. Gavin Kane finished third at 184 pounds with a 6-3 decision over Neil Antrassian of Virginia in the third-place match. Max Shaw was third at 197 after an 18-6 major decision win over Franklin & Marshall's John Crawford. And Brandon Whitman took third at 285 pounds with a win by fall in just 21 seconds over Jacob Sartorio of Appalachian State.

The Campbell wrestling team recently returned to Buies Creek, N.C. after opening the season with a pair of wins over Little Rock and Buffalo and one loss to No. 14 Iowa at the Battle in the River City at Jacksonville University.
Scouting the Wolverines
The No. 5-ranked Michigan squad had four champions at the annual Michigan State Open in their debut on Nov. 5, with 11 place winners. The Wolverines will face off with the Campbell Camels at the Battle at Bragg as a part of the doubleheader.
