Greene Homers For Walk-Off Win Over UConn
March 5, 2021 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Coming down to the eighth inning on an 0-1 pitch, junior Taylor Greene slugged her second home run of the season for North Carolina's extra-inning, come-from-behind, 3-1 win over UConn on Friday evening at Anderson Stadium.
Â
Carolina's Brittany Pickett and Payton Kinney of UConn maintained a scoreless game through the sixth inning. The Huskies jumped on the board first with a solo-shot in the sixth. However, the Tar Heels capitalized on a UConn miscue to knot the game at 1-1 in the seventh as Kristina Burkhardt crossed the plate. With the international tie breaker in effect and Greene up to bat, the junior smashed a two-run home run to right field for the 3-1 win in the eighth inning.
Â
Greene had a day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a single, double and home run. Tallying double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season, Pickett fanned 11 in her fifth win of the season. Kayla Baptista and Burkhardt each recorded a hit in the win.
Â
Reese Guevarra scored the lone run for the Huskies. Kinney struck out 10 in the loss.
Â
After day one of the Carolina Classic, the Tar Heels improve to 6-5 while UConn falls to 6-6.
Â
The Tar Heels resume the Carolina Classic Saturday at 1:30 p.m. vs. South Carolina and 4 p.m. vs. Elon Saturday at Anderson Stadium.
