
Men's Tennis Sweeps Wofford, 7-0

CHAPEL HILL— Top-ranked North Carolina played its first outdoor tennis match of the season at home and dominated Wofford, 7-0, on Wednesday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels, ranked No. 1 in the nation in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, improved to 11-0 to start the season and won their 13th consecutive match. The Terriers fell to 6-6.
UNC was playing its first outing since March 7. Its two most recent home matches against Boston College (March 12) and Duke (March 17) were postponed due to Covid-19 protocols within the Duke program.
Carolina started the afternoon by winning the doubles point as Rinky Hijikata and Adam Neff won, 6-1, at No. 3 over Will Fullett and Ashe Ray, and sixth-ranked William Blumberg and Brian Cernoch also won, 6-1, at No. 1 over Omar Williams and Bryce Keim.
Fifth-ranked Simon Soendergaard and Mac Kiger also won their match, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles over Javi Casasolas and Callum Randle.
Cernoch was in cruise control and won the first singles match of the day by a score of 6-1, 6-0 over Ray at No. 3, followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win by Blumberg over Williams at No. 1. Kiger clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Fullett.
Hijikata picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Randle at No. 2 singles, and Soendergaard beat Keim 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 5. The afternoon concluded with Peck's 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Diego Losada at No. 4 singles.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at South Carolina.
