Softball Drops One-Run Game vs. Memphis

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Despite working back from a four-run deficit, North Carolina fell short to Memphis, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Tigers struck early by taking a four-run lead by the second inning. Carolina made a pair of pitching changes to hold Memphis off while UNC plates four in the bottom of the second. However, Memphis managed an unearned run in the third four the 5-4 win.
Leading UNC at the plate and in the circle, Brittany Pickett was named to the Crimson Classic all-tournament team. In addition to hitting two home runs, Pickett struck out 27 in 23.2 innings for a 0.59 ERA.
Earning their first win of the season, the Tigers sit at 1-8 while UNC is an even 5-5.
The Tar Heels return home for the Carolina Classic Friday through Sunday at Anderson Stadium.

» Memphis jumped on the board in the first with a pair of runs as Kendall Lee drew an RBI-walk and Sam Ibison drove in one on a ground out to second. The Tigers added two more on Sara Ann Davidson's two-run home run to center in the second.
» Following a pair of pitching changes, Brittany Pickett closed out the second inning with two strikeouts.
» UNC responded by plating four runs on three hits and a pair of errors in the second. Following a walk by Pickett, Kiannah Pierce reached on an error that allowed pinch runner Aneshia Jordan to score. A single to right by Destiny Middleton plated two before Kayla Baptista doubled through the left side for the 4-4 tie.
» Memphis quickly reclaimed the lead in the third on an RBI-single.
» Pickett struck out five in 6.0 innings. Bri Stubbs highlighted UNC's offense with two hits.
