Carolina Earns Numerous Firsts At Inaugural Virginia Beach Event

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – North Carolina competed at the Virginia Beach Invitational Monday, claiming numerous firsts in the first-ever collegiate competition at the new Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
Highlights on the women's side side included senior Jill Shippee winning the weight throw with a personal best of 19.89 meters and sophomore Sydney Banks hitting a season-best with a 1.72 meters in the high jump.
On the men's side, junior Troy Yearwood won the weight throw as the Tar Heels took the top three spots in that event, with James Joycey in second and Daniel McArthur both turning in personal bests. McArthur also won the shot put.
Graduate student Brandon Tubby won the men's mile for the second time this season, finishing in a time of 4:01.11 in a six-man field that included three Tar Heels. After Tubby, Allen Siegler was third and Michael Spragley was sixth.
John Tatter was first in the men's 5000 meters and senior Isaiah Palmer won the men's 400 meters.
Other collegiate teams in the competition were NC State, Norfolk State and Virginia, with additional unattached athletes also competing.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the VT Elite Meet on Friday and Saturday at Virginia Tech. Is the third trip of the season to Blacksburg for UNC.
