CARY—The upstart duo of North Carolina's Casey Kania and Logan Zapp saw their run in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional doubles draw come to an end on Tuesday, finishing second in the event after falling in the final to a team from Wake Forest. Despite the loss, Kania and Zapp's growth as a doubles duo will allow them to move on to the national championships in two weeks in California.
The Demon Deacons' Jakob Schnaitter and Siddhant Banthia beat Kania and Zapp, 6-1, 6-2 on in the regional championship match on Tuesday at the Cary Tennis Center.
With their runner-up finish at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships, Zapp and Kania have earned an automatic bid to the 2021 ITA National Fall Championships, to be held in San Diego, Calif., from Nov. 4-7.
"Logan and Casey are a new team that has gotten better every single week this Fall," Tar Heel head coach Sam Paul said after Tuesday's match. "I'm very proud of them. They had a great tournament and will learn a lot from this week."
Kania and Zapp represent Carolina's third consecutive ITA Regional doubles finalist (2018, 2019 and 2021) and fourth in the last five years. Tar Heels Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard won the doubles title in the Carolina Regional in 2019, the last time the event was held prior to this weekend.
