Milers Lead The Way At Day 1 Of Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – North Carolina took the top two spots in the men's mile Friday to highlight Day 1 of competition at the Hokie Invitational. It's the second weekend of the 2021 indoor track & field season for the Tar Heels, and they're back at the same place they spent last weekend, Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.

North Carolina graduate student Brandon Tubby ran the mile in 4:04.52 Friday to take first, just ahead of teammate Conor Lundy in 4:04.56. Also in the top five was Allen Siegler at 4:10.49. Lundy and Siegler are both grad transfers who ran in the Ivy League last year, Lundy at Princeton and Siegler at Yale.
In the women's 3,000 meters, UNC took two of the top five spots with Paige Hofstad third in 9:32.21 and Mady Clahane fifth in 9:35.20. Both are fifth year seniors.
The Tar Heels also took two of the top three spots in the men's weight throw, with Troy Yearwood, a junior transfer who won the event at last weekend's Virginia Tech Invitational, placing second with a throw of 19.68m. James Joycey, a spot behind Yearwood for the second week in a row, was third at 19.24m.
Senior Jill Shippee was fifth in the women's weight throw with a distance of 19.18m.
In the men's 300 meters, Ryan Saint-Germain finished second and was the top collegiate runner in 33.90.
Other top-five Tar Heel finishes were senior Isaiah Palmer at fourth in the men's 60 meters with a time of 6.79 seconds, and John Tatter, fourth in the men's 3,000 meters in 8:26.44.
