Carolina Finishes Seventh at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The North Carolina women's golf team earned a seventh-place finish to wrap up Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club for a successful start to spring break. In Sunday's final round, the Tar Heels shot 16-over-par to give them a cumulative score of 893, 38 strokes behind tournament winner Wake Forest. Carolina's performance was a notable improvement from last year's 17th-place finish at the 2019 event.
"Overall I thought the team performed well this weekend in tough conditions against an extremely strong field," head coach Jan Mann said. "We took a lot of positives away from this weekend and are excited to head to Arizona this week to compete in the Clover Cup."
Sophomore Jennifer Zhou finished tied for 10th overall to lead the Tar Heels, marking her fourth top-15 finish of the year. She shot three-over-par 74 in the final round, highlighted by three birdies in a row starting at the fifth hole.
Placing 20th overall, freshman Kayla Smith finished in the top-25 for the second-consecutive tournament. Smith shot two-over-par 73 in the final round, beginning with all pars on the front nine.
Senior Mariana Ocano bounced back from a difficult front nine with a birdie on the tenth hole. Ocano shot a 12-over-par 83.
After a tough first hole, senior Brynn Walker finished the front nine with eight pars in a row on her way to shooting five-over-par 76.
Freshman Krista Junkkari completed the round shooting a six-over-par 77.
Nicole Lu, competing as an individual for the Tar Heels, shot a two-over-par 73 in her final round. Lu was two-under-par on the front nine, featuring three-straight birdies.
Wake Forest won the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Course. In the last round, the Demon Deacons shot 280 to win easily over Auburn who finished 26 strokes behind in second place.
Carolina is back in action in the Clover Cup at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona March 13-15.
