Tar Heels See Benefits From Duke Meet Weekend
February 9, 2020 | Fencing
DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina women's fencing team finished 2-2 Sunday at the Duke Meet, beating MIT and Brandeis and falling to two top-10 teams, Penn State and Temple, in a day of fencing at Card Gym.
That made it a 4-4 weekend for the Tar Heels, following a 2-2 record by the UNC men on Saturday. In addition to the team marks, individuals were able to pick up wins against strong opponents that should prove helpful in the selection process for regionals. Yet, the impact went beyond the weekend's records.
"That's the big thing about the weekend for us," UNC coach Matt Jednak said. "We get to show the people who support us where we are now and what we've learned this year and how we've grown, and show the alums around here that the program is thriving."
After the men's competition on Saturday, the women opened Sunday with a 17-10 win over MIT, with all three weapons winning.
UNC then fell to No. 6 Penn State 20-7 before beating Brandeis 15-12, with all three weapon squads earning 5-4 wins.
In the final meet of the day, the Tar Heels fell to 16-11 to No. 5 Temple, with the UNC foil squad pulling out a 7-2 win.
"Foil winning that was huge," Jednak said. "Temple was super strong all day – they were 5-0 at this meet, with wins over Notre Dame, Duke and Penn State, but we fought hard and contended. I was really proud to see how strong and how focused we were at the end of the day. It was a strong meet overall to finish the day."
Next up for UNC is the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, Feb. 22-23 in South Bend, Ind.
"The Temple team effort gives us good momentum for everyone going in ACCs," Jednak said. "Putting everything together against that caliber of team is something we really want see."
