The ACC held a men's fencing championship annually for 10 years from 1971 through 1980 but discontinued it after the 1980 season. With the addition of Notre Dame to the league in 2014-15, the ACC again had four fencing programs for both men and women and reinstituted the league championship in 2015, adding a women's competition.
Â
The Fighting Irish squads are the defending champions in both the men's and women's team competition. The UNC women won in 2018, when the tournament was last held in Chapel Hill.
 Â
North Carolina owns the most men's team titles all-time with eight, while Notre Dame holds a league-best four women's team championships.
