Tar Heels Ready For ACC Fencing Competition
February 21, 2020 | Fencing
North Carolina travels to the Atlantic Coast Conference Fencing Championships at Notre Dame this weekend, with individual competition set for Saturday and the team championship for Sunday.
Action at the Castellan Family Fencing Center in Notre Dame, Ind., starts at 8 a.m. Saturday with the men's individual competition. Championship bouts are set for 12:30 p.m. and the women's tournament starts at 1:30. On Sunday, the men's team competition kicks off at 7 a.m. and the women's competition follows, beginning at noon.
The men's and women's individual finals on Saturday and the entire team championship on Sunday will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX). On Saturday, the men's individual finals will be at 12:30 p.m. with women's individual finals at 6 p.m.
In this week's CollegeFencing360 Men's Coaches Poll, Notre Dame is ranked No. 5, while Duke is No. 10. UNC and Boston College each are receiving votes. In the women's poll, Notre Dame is ranked No. 3, while Duke and North Carolina are receiving votes.
Notre Dame is hosting the ACC Fencing Championships for the second time (the first was in 2016). The ACC held a men's fencing championship annually for 10 years from 1971 through 1980 but discontinued it after the 1980 season. With the addition of Notre Dame to the league in 2014-15, the ACC again had four fencing programs for both men and women and reinstituted the league championship in 2015, adding a women's competition.
The Fighting Irish squads are the defending champions in both the men's and women's team competition. The UNC women won in 2018, when the tournament was last held in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina owns the most men's team titles all-time with eight, while Notre Dame holds a league-best four women's team championships.
