Tar Heels Drop One-Run Game to Elon

CHAPEL HILL – Despite a season-high of seven stolen bases, North Carolina came up short to Elon, 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Anderson Stadium.
Freshmen Gaby Katz and Caroline Cagle tossed two scoreless frames to begin the midweek contest. The Tar Heels responded to Elon's two runs in the third inning as Destiny Middleton stole home. However, the Phoenix held on for the win.
The Tar Heels sit at 6-10 heading into ACC play while Elon improves to 8-6 on the season.
Key Moments
» Abby Settlemyre singled and stole both second and third in the first inning, but she was left on base. Carolina put two on via a walk and hit-by-pitch in the second, but the pair was left on base.
» After two scoreless innings, Elon scored two runs on a pair of RBI-doubles by Bella Devesa and Megan Grant.
» However, Carolina responded with a run in the third, sparked by the top of the order. Middleton reached on a Phoenix miscue and stole second before Settlemyre dropped her second bunt-single of the day. The pair successfully stole second and home to put UNC on the board.
» Although Elon threatened in the sixth, Carolina worked out of a bases-loaded jam thanks to a pair of groundouts to Settlemyre and Middleton.
» Pinch hitter Taylor Puetz drew a four-pitch walk in the seventh before Middleton tallied her second hit of the day. However, Carolina was unable to rally for the win.
