Tar Heels Advance Past Gamecocks, 4-2, To Reach ITA Indoor Quarterfinals

MADISON, WISC.—The University of North Carolina men's tennis team beat South Carolina for the second time in two weeks, downing the Gamecocks, 4-2, on Friday evening to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor National Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
The fourth-seeded Tar Heels will face fifth-seeded Florida on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern in the quarterfinal round. The winner will advance to meet the winner of the match between top-seeded Ohio State and Wake Forest on Sunday in the semis.
Coming off a 4-0 shutout win over South Carolina two weekends ago in Chapel Hill, UNC improved to 8-0 this season. Benjamin Sigouin won the deciding match at No. 2 singles on this night, beating Raphael Lambling 7-6 (4), 6-3 to clinch the trip to the quarterfinals. William Blumberg and Rinky Hijikata also won their matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
The Tar Heels won the doubles point when William Blumberg and Brian Cernoch breezed to a win at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and Rinky Hijikata and Sigouin won, 6-1, at No. 3.
The fourth-seeded Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday against fifth-seeded Florida in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoors. UNC will be vying for its third consecutive trip to the semifinals.
