Tar Heels in Seventh After Day One at ACC Championships
April 18, 2019 | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, NC - After an up-and-down first and second round of the ACC Championships the Tar Heels are in 7th place.
Freshman Jennifer Zhou, who entered the tournament averaging 73.38 strokes per round, led the way for the Tar Heels, and is currently in 6th place. As a team, the Tar Heels are a combined 20-over-par.
The par 72, 6,089 yards course at Sedgefield Country Club enticed golfers to score on its back-nine, all while instilling fear on the front-nine, which proved to be tricky for most.
Zhou's 2-under-par 70 first round featured four birdies, twelve pars and two bogeys. Following her strong performance in the opening round, the freshman recorded a 1-over-par 73 in the second round. Zhou's second round score was the lowest for the Tar Heels.
In conjunction to her first-year teammate, junior Brynn Walker also posted a 2-under-par 70 in her first round. As Walker made the turn in the opening round she had a two stroke lead over the field of competitors. However, a double-bogey on the treacherous first hole saw Walker relinquish her lead. In the following round, Walker posted a 7-over-par 79 and is tied for 28th.
Junior Mariana Ocano rebounded from her opening 8-over-par 80 to record a 3-over-par 75 in her second round. Ocano is tied for 47th.
Sophomore Ava Bergner scored a 7-over-par 79 in her first round, but improved two strokes with a 5-over-par 77 in the second round. Bergner is tied for 49th.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons lead the tournament with a combined team score of 9-under-par.

In an effort to avoid the likelihood of inclement weather in the Greensboro area on Friday, the schedule for the 2019 ACC Women's Golf Championship held at Sedgefield Country Club has been altered. The teams completed the first and second rounds (36 holes) on Thursday and there will be no play on Friday.
Thus, the third and final round of the ACC Championships will begin 8:30 Saturday morning.
