But the Cavaliers won the next three matches, on Courts 1, 2 and 6. UVA's Carl Soderlund, ranked No. 5 nationally, beat UNC sophomore Benjamin Sigouin on Court 1, 6-0, 7-5.
The other three matches went to three sets. On Court 2, UNC junior Josh Peck bounced back to win his second set after falling in the first, but UVa's Brandon Nakashima won the third, 6-3.
The match was clinched on Court 6, where Kiger won the first set 6-4, but Lizen took the second 6-1. The third set went to a tiebreaker, which Lizen won 7-5 to give his team the win.
