Tar Heels Win 7-0 At Virginia Tech
March 2, 2019 | Men's Tennis
North Carolina earned an Atlantic Coast Conference men's tennis win at Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon, shutting out the host Hokies 7-0 at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Tar Heels opened with the doubles point then took all six singles matches in straight sets.
Fifth-ranked UNC is now 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play. Virginia Tech fell to 8-5 (0-3 ACC).
In doubles, sophomore Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard teamed for a quick 6-1 win on Court 2. On Court 3, freshman Brian Cernoch and junior Josh Peck won 6-2 to clinch the point and send the match on to singles.
The first to wrap up was Soendergaard, who beat Brandon Perez 6-1, 6-0 on Court 5. Junior William Blumberg then zipped to a 6-2, 6-1 win on Court 1, beating #58 Jason Kros. Kiger, on Court 6, clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Evan Fragistas that made it 4-0 Tar Heels.
Even though the team result had been decided, the teams elected to play out the other singles matches. On Court 4, Peck beat Carlo Donato, 6-3, 6-3. Next to finish was Cernoch, who played through a second-set tiebreaker to beat Henrik Korsgaard 6-4, 7-6(7) on Court 2. Senior Blaine Boyden made it 7-0 by beating Alex Ribeiro 6-4, 6-4 on Court 3.
The lopsided win was a rarity in this rivalry, particularly the meetings in Blacksburg. In each of the six meetings there since Virginia Tech joined the ACC, the final score has been 4-3. UNC has won four of those, including the 2017 trip.
After opening ACC play with two matches in three days, the Tar Heels now have a break in the schedule of nearly two weeks. Their next match is March 15 at Georgia Tech.
