North Carolina Splits Day Two at the Mary Nutter Classic
February 23, 2019 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Following a water-logged tournament opener, North Carolina topped Utah, 7-3 in a marathon game on Friday afternoon. The Tar Heels quickly turned back around to face RV New Mexico State, but fell short 6-2 to wrap up day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
After getting off to a slow start against Utah, North Carolina jumped on the board in the fourth inning. UNC added two more before Utah answered back, cutting into the Tar Heels' lead, 3-2. However, a four-run seventh inning gave Carolina the cushion it needed for a 7-3 win in a nearly three-hour game. Hannah George earned her first career win while Brittany Pickett picked up her second save this season.
In game two, New Mexico State took an early 1-0 lead in the first before UNC was able to come from behind, 3-1 by the third. However, the Aggies plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead for the 6-2 decision.
With the split decision, North Carolina sits at 6-5 while Utah falls to 5-7 and New Mexico State improves to 8-3.
