OUTREACH
National Girls and Women in Sports Day
• In terms of numbers of participants, the largest UNC student-athlete outreach event each year is the National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration, which was held this year on Jan. 27. Members of 14 women's teams (all but women's tennis, which was competing that day) shared their sports with young boys and girls during the 90-minute event at Fetzer Gym.

Reading in Schools
• It's been a big month for reading at local elementary schools, both for Black History Month Read-ins (see above) and as part of the Northside Read-A-Thon.
Annnnnd our @UNC_SADev from @TarHeelFootball @UNCSoftball even tried to do "the floss" with our 5th grade @NorthsideES @chccs Navigators. Awesome readers — awesome dancers. Thanks @GoHeels friends for participating in the fun of #NESReadathon2019 #chccslibraries pic.twitter.com/GjFV4T6vuI

Service Trip
• Fencing took advantage of a weekend most of the team had off (six athletes competed at the Junior Olympics in Denver) to travel to Asheville.
Had a great time this weekend with @HaywoodStreet serving Asheville's homeless! 15 fencers spent their off-weekend in the mountains and helped serve lunch to over 300 people! pic.twitter.com/BWVUrrkWCR

• The rowing team has become a regular at the SECU Family House.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT
2019 Student-Athlete Career and Networking Fair
• One of the best parts about our annual Career and Networking Fair, in addition to the record turnout, was seeing all the former UNC student-athletes back to represent their companies and organizations while assisting current Tar Heel students. Click here for more.
Path to Professional Schools
• Student-Athlete Development recently hosted a program for student-athletes planning on health career careers. The hour-long session offered an overview of the application process, with information from Claudis Polk and Lisa Long from the UNC School of Medicine's Office of Special Programs. Also there to provide perspective were five former UNC student-athletes who are now in graduate school or about to start: Cameron Campbell (football) and Erika Baker (track & field) at the UNC School of Dentistry, Shelley Warner (rowing) and Emma Astrike-Davis (cross country/track & field) from the UNC School of Medicine, and Abby Fisher (swimming), who will begin the Physician Assistant program at Wake Forest School of Medicine later this spring.
ACADEMICS
All-ACC Academic honors were recently announced for fall sports. These awards take into consideration both athletic and academic performance during the 2018 season.
Highlights:
• December graduate Alex Comsia was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer.
• On both the field hockey and women's soccer All-ACC Academic teams, UNC led the way with the highest number of honorees.
"Over the years I've seen that our best teams on the field are also the best academically, and that's true this year." – @CoachSheltonUNC
