Carolina Earns Semifinals Spot With Win Over TCU
February 16, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CHICAGO – A three-set win on Court 3 by third-year player Josh Peck clinched a 4-3 win over TCU Saturday and earned the UNC men's tennis team a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship semifinals for the third time in the past four years.
The Tar Heels, who won the event in 2016, will play Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m. for a spot in the final. The Demon Deacons beat UCLA 4-3 in the quarterfinals to advance.
"There were a lot of positives for our program today, with our team reaching the semifinals and a former player, Brayden Schnur, reaching the finals of the ATP/WTA event in New York," UNC coach Sam Paul said.
Playing on the indoor courts at the Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago, the Tar Heels claimed the doubles point with wins on Court 1 (Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Sigouin) and Court 2 (Blaine Boyden and William Blumberg), both by 6-2 scores.
In singles play, UNC went up 2-0 with a quick win by Sigouin on Court 2, where he beat Alastair Gray 6-2, 6-2. TCU took the next two points with wins on Court 6 and Court 4. With the score tied 2-2, senior Blaine Boyden won on Court 5. After falling in the first set, he won the second in a tiebreaker and then claimed the match with a 6-3 third-set victory.
TCU evened the score at 3-3 with a win on Court 1, putting all eyes on Court 3, where Peck had won 7-5 in the first set but fallen in a tiebreaker in the second. He breezed to a win in the third, though, 6-1 over Reese Stadler to earn his team the right to move on.
UNC improved to 7-1 on the season with the win.
