Tar Heels Head to NC State For ACC Matchup
January 18, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The North Carolina Tar Heels open conference competition on Saturday, Jan. 19 against the NC State Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C. The first diving session begins at 10 a.m. while swimming events kick off at 11 a.m.
Fresh off a successful dual meet at the Naval Academy, the women enter the ACC matchup with a 4-0 record while the men stand 3-1 in dual meet competition.
"Each dual meet is a separate entity and tomorrow we face a national power in NC State," UNC head coach Rich DeSelm said. "They've done a tremendous job rebuilding their program and their men's team is one of the top teams in the country and could possibly win the NCAA Championship. Even their women's team has emerged as an annual top-10 team. They just have a lot of fire power and they're well coached. We know what we're going into, but our goals remain the same — do everything that we can to put ourselves in a position to win a meet, to win races and to win close races."
UNC will have to take on some tough competition in their ACC opener. Both NC State teams are ranked among the top 10 programs in the nation — men sixth and women ninth. Though Carolina's national team rankings are not as high as their in-state rivals', several Tar Heels have made impressive runs throughout the season as they picked up event titles, personal records and even some of the top times in school history last semester.
"I hope to see our athletes unified with incredible team energy and team support and our goals are to have some great relays and great individual performances," DeSelm said. "Win, tie or loss, we want to come out of the meet feeling like we got better from where we were a week ago.
"Everybody on the team has the responsibility to step up. You can't rely on any one person so I'm hoping everybody goes into tomorrow with the passion and the grit to rise up and to compete and to race to the end and to do everything that we can to win races."
The Wolfpack will also honor their senior student-athletes during Saturday's competition, presenting yet another challenge for UNC to tackle.
"It'll be a packed house," DeSelm said. "They do a good job filling their arena and they invite club teams from around the area to come watch their events so we'd love to have the support of any Carolina fans that can be there."
LAST TIME OUT
The North Carolina swimming and diving teams left their Penn State and Navy rematch on Jan. 12 with three additional dual meet wins under their belt.
For the second-straight season, the Tar Heel women swept their opponents, winning 192-108 against Navy and 173-127 against Penn State.
The men were able to hold the lead over the Nittany Lions to come out victorious, 155-145, but the Midshipmen redeemed themselves from their 2018 performance and bested the Heels 161-134 in their home pool.
