The UNC men's tennis team earned its seventh Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the spring Sunday, winning 6-1 at Boston College. Playing on indoor courts at Flynn Recreation Center, the Tar Heels improved to 16-4 overall, 7-1 ACC.
Next up for Carolina is a pair of home matches, the final ones of the regular season. UNC hosts Georgia Tech on Saturday at noon and Clemson next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels opened against the Eagles with the doubles point, winning on courts 2 and 3. On Court 2, junior Blaine Boyden and freshman Benjamin Sigouin earned a 6-1 victory, and junior Simon Soendergaard and freshman Mac Kiger followed with a 6-2 win on Court 3 to seal the point. The team of senior Robert Kelly and sophomore William Blumberg led 5-2 on Court 1 when the match was suspended.
In singles, Blumberg was the first to win, on Court 1. He beat Derek Austin 6-1, 6-2. Kelly was next on Court 4, where he beat Kent Mukai 6-2, 6-4.
Soendergaard clinched the team win with a straight-sets victory on Court 3, beating Markus Nordby 6-1, 6-3.
On Court 2, Sigouin dropped his first set to Chris Grasel but rallied to take the second 6-1 and claim the victory with a 6-4 win in the third.
With play available on just four indoor courts, the fifth and sixth spots started as courts opened up. At No. 5, Boyden beat Max Palmer 6-2, 6-2.
The Eagles picked up their only win at No. 6, where Sean Mullins beat Kiger. Kiger won the first set 6-1, and Mullins took the second 7-5. With the team outcome decided, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set and Mullins won that 11-9.
