No. 25 Tar Heels Fall At No. 9 Virginia Tech
February 3, 2018 | Wrestling
BLACKSBURG, Va. --- No. 9 Virginia Tech won seven of 10 bouts in a 21-9 victory over No. 25 North Carolina Saturday night at Cassell Coliseum. James Szymanski, Kennedy Monday and Cory Daniel were winners for the Tar Heels, who fell to 8-9 and 2-1 in the ACC. The Hokies improved to 13-2 and 3-0 in the league.
Szymanski got the night started on a positive note for UNC, dominating Ryan More at 125 pounds in a 10-3 decision. After No. 18 Dennis Gustafson tied the dual with a 6-0 win at 133, VT's Brent Moore gave the Hokies the lead for good in controversial fashion. No. 16 A.C. Headlee appeared to force overtime at 141 with a takedown in the final seconds, but a video review ruled that Moore escaped just before the buzzer to get the win.
Ryan Blees then pulled off the biggest win of the night, upsetting No. 6 Troy Heilmann 3-1 with a sudden victory takedown. The loss was just the fourth of the season for Heilmann, who fell to 24-4 overall and 14-3 in dual competition.
No. 16 Monday responded with an overtime win of his own at 157, taking down Solomon Chishko in the first five seconds of the sudden victory period. Monday dominated the third period but was unable to pull Chishko in from the edge of the mat late in regulation. But the redshirt freshman struck almost immediately in overtime to secure the win.
Virginia Tech won each of the next four bouts to secure the dual. No. 18 Daniel capped the night on a positive note for Carolina, holding off No. 17 Andrew Dunn for his 12th win in his last 13 matches at heavyweight.
UNC will return to action Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 when the Tar Heels visit NC State in Raleigh.
