Tar Heels Finish Sixth In Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate
February 20, 2018 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - The North Carolina women's golf team finished the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate tied for sixth Tuesday. In the final round of the tournament, the Tar Heels shot 18-over par, bringing their tournament total to 33-over-par 897.
After two 75 rounds on Sunday and Monday, junior Kelly Whaley (Farmington, Conn.) led Carolina in the final round at the English Turn Golf & Country Club, shooting an even-par 72 to finish at 6-over par. She fired in three birdies over her final three holes to move into a tie for 11th, her best finish since she tied for seventh in the first spring tournament of 2017.
"That was a very good day for her and a good tournament," head coach Jan Mann said. "She struggled a little bit in the beginning today, but maintained her composure, kept it going and ended up with those three birdies that certainly helped her."
Sophomore Brynn Walker shot a 77 Tuesday to finish at 8-over and tied for 20th. Freshman Ava Bergner, after ending the second round in a tie for eighth, shot an 80 in the final round to finish at 9-over par and tied for 22nd. Senior Bryana Nguyen shot a 77 to finish at 10-over and tied for 28th. Sophomore Mariana Ocano shot an 82 to end the tournament at 25-over and in 79th.
The finishes by Carolina's top-four marks the second time Carolina has has had four players finish in the top 30 of a tournament this season. The other time came at the Ocean Course Invitational (Sept. 4-5), Carolina's first tournament of the year where the Tar Heels finished in a tie for fifth.
"We saw some really good things with the team," Mann said. "We're definitely making process on the pieces that we're wanting to. This tournament was good for kicking the rust off. I think quite a few teams had already played a tournament, but it was good to get back into it.
No. 14 Florida held onto it's lead over the field for the entire tournament, finishing at 8-over-par 873 to capture the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate title. After moving into the lead on Monday, No. 39 Sierra Brooks of Florida did not give it up, going on to win the individual title at 7-under-par 209.
UP NEXT: The Tar Heels will travel to the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C. March 2-4.
