Walker Has Career Day, Tar Heels in Tenth After Two Rounds
October 27, 2018 | Women's Golf
WILMINGTON, NC – After the first round was suspended following 15 holes of golf, play resumed at 10 a.m. Saturday under overcast skies with a chill in the air. The Tar Heels finished the round at 19-over and tied for 10th at the Landfall Tradition, hosted at the Country Club of Landfall Dye Course.
Kelly Whaley led the way in the first round with a 2-over 74. Jennifer Zhou and Mariana Ocano shot 76 and 78, respectively. Nicole Lu rounded out the scoring with a 79.
Following a short break, the teams proceeded to the same hole they began at on Friday for another shotgun start to the second round, just as the sun began to peek out for the first time during the weekend.
The second round proved especially noteworthy for junior Brynn Walker. After a tough first round, Walker bounced back in a big way, carding a career-best 4-under 68. She had seven birdies in the round, including four in a row on holes 10 through 13. This also marked Walker's first career round in the 60s, and she leads all golfers this weekend with 10 birdies through two rounds.
Whaley stayed steady with another 2-over 74 and remains the team leader at 4-over for the tournament. She was especially solid on the back nine, where she posted eight pars and a birdie on No. 14.
Ocano and Zhou both carded 78s in the second round.
The third and final round will begin with a shotgun start on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. with the Tar Heels playing alongside Wake Forest and Oklahoma State.
