Tar Heels Extend Shutout String In NCAA Second Round Win

CARY, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's soccer team got a first half goal by Bridgette Andrzejewski and utilized another stout defensive performance to ease past Colorado 1-0 Friday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at WakeMed Soccer Park.
With the win the Tar Heels advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament where it will play Sunday against Princeton at 1 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park. The 13th-ranked Tigers fought to a 1-1 tie with 21st-ranked NC State in Friday's first game and the Tigers advanced in the tournament by prevailing 5-4 on penalty kicks which ended after the seventh round.
In the second game, the Tar Heels dominated the first half against the Buffaloes (12-6-4), outshooting them 11-3 and taking four corner kicks to one for UC. The Tar Heels got the goal they need in the 26th minute. Lotte Wubben-Moy served a dangerous ball from the right side into the box that found freshman Sydney Spruill. The Greenville, N.C. native had her shot saved by Colorado netminder Jalen Tompkins but Andrzewjeski, a sophomore from Lutherville, Md., was Johnny-on-the-spot, pouncing on the rebounding and finishing into the lower left corner of the goal for her seventh goal of the season. She now ranks second on the team in goal scoring behind Alessia Russo's nine goals.
The second half of the game was a more even affair with both teams taking eight shots in the second 45 minutes. Neither team could get another goal, however, and the Tar Heels improved to 17-2-2 on the season, earning their spot in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels have gone 13-0-2 in its last 15 games since losing at Penn State 1-0 on September 7.
UNC finished with a 19-11 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Tar Heels finished with six corner kicks and Colorado had two. Colorado goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins made seven saves while the Tar Heels' Samantha Leshnak made three saves. Leshnak has now recorded 13 shutouts this season in 21 games and she has posted clean sheets in four successive games. Leshnak allowed six goals in the first six games of the season and has allowed only four tallies by opponents in the past 15 games.
Sunday's third round game will begin at 1 p.m. Tickets will go on sale at WakeMed Soccer Park at 12 p.m. and the gates will also open at that time. The match will be webcast live on ACC Network Extra with live streaming on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
