No. 15 Tar Heels Fall At No. 12 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. --- No. 12 Virginia Tech raced out to a 13-0 lead and held off No. 15 North Carolina for a 27-13 Atlantic Coast Conference dual win Saturday night at the Moss Arts Center. Evan Henderson, John Michael Staudenmayer and Ethan Ramos were winners for UNC, which had its winning streak snapped at eight in falling to 9-2 and 0-1 in the ACC.
Virginia Tech opened the night in explosive fashion, getting a pair of bonus point wins at 125 and 133. No. 3 Joey Dance pinned Anthony Bosco in the first bout of the dual before Dennis Gustafson's major decision put the Hokies up 10-0. In the first ranked matchup of the evening, No. 11 Solomon Chishko outlasted No. 8 Ward 7-3 at 141 pounds, giving Tech a 13-0 advantage before the Tar Heels got on the board.
No. 7 Henderson opened the scoring for Carolina with his seventh pin of the year as he got the fall against Sal Mastriani in just 2:39. But No. 4 Nick Brascetta responded with an emphatic 16-5 major decision at 157 to put VT up 17-6 at the intermission.
UNC won back-to-back matches at 165 and 174 to pull within four points in the dual before the Hokies won the final three to seal the team victory. No. 13 Staudenmayer was very impressive at 165, blanking No. 19 David McFadden 6-0. No. 2 Ramos followed that with an emphatic win of his own, dominating David Bergida in a 14-5 major decision.
But the Hokies proved to be too much in the heavyweights, as the hosts won a pair of tight bouts at 184 and 197 before No. 3 Ty Walz capped the night with a major decision at 285.
Carolina returns to Chapel Hill next Sunday, Jan. 24, when the Tar Heels host Navy at 2 p.m.
