RALEIGH, N.C. --- Evan Henderson and Ethan Ramos scored major decisions but No. 3 North Carolina State won eight of 10 matches to top No. 14 North Carolina 28-8 Monday night at Dorton Arena. Two-time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski's technical fall at 285 pounds was one of three bonus point wins for the Wolfpack, which improved to 18-0 and 3-0 in the ACC. Carolina, which fell to 9-3 and 0-2 in the league, will return to conference action next Saturday, Feb. 6, at Virginia.
NC State opened the dual with consecutive major decisions at 125 and 133. Sean Fausz beat Anthony Bosco 11-3 and Jamal Morris bested James Szymanski 13-3 to give the hosts a quick 8-0 lead.
No. 11 Joey Ward went back and forth with No. 3 Kevin Jack at 141, with Ward's early takedown the only scoring outside of a pair of Jack escapes. The Tar Heel junior appeared to have it won with a takedown in sudden victory overtime, but a video review upheld the ruling on the mat. A series of stall penalties and a third caution in the first tiebreaker period gave Jack a 5-3 decision.
Henderson got Carolina on the board at 149 and was dominant throughout. After a takedown in the first 20 seconds of the first period, the redshirt senior added a second takedown and four back points to lead 8-2 after two. Henderson, who had won three straight matches by fall, was unable to stick Beau Donahue, but the 12-2 major saw him improve to 16-4 and 2-0 in the ACC.
After Tommy Gantt's 10-4 win over Christian Barber at 157, UNC found itself on the wrong side of another tight bout at 165. No. 7 Max Rohskopf led No. 10 John Michael Staudenmayer late in the third period when Staudenmayer got in on a shot. The redshirt senior was on the verge of a winning takedown but could not gain control before time ran out.
Ramos was even more comprehensive than his All-American teammate, winning 14-2 over Nicky Hall at 174. After taking a 5-0 lead into the final period, Ramos added two more takedowns and a four-point near fall that almost led to a pin in the final seconds. The victory was the fourth bonus point win in five for Ramos, who is now 15-2 and a team-best 11-1 in duals.
NC State claimed a pair of high-scoring decisions at 184 and 197 before Gwiazdowski's tech fall at 285 rounded out the evening.
Carolina will next travel to ACC foe Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 6.
