No. 15 Carolina Sweeps Competition At Pitt Duals
January 10, 2016 | Wrestling
PITTSBURGH --- Led by triple winners Joey Ward, John Michael Staudenmayer, Ethan Ramos and Alex Utley, No. 15 North Carolina swept the competition at the 2016 Pitt Duals Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House. Carolina opened the day with a 26-11 win over Edinboro before defeating Ivy League foes Columbia and Brown by scores of 24-12 and 29-9. Evan Henderson added a pair of pins for the Tar Heels, who improved to 9-1 on the year heading into next Saturday's ACC opener at Virginia Tech.
UNC fell behind in all three duals but used bonus point wins to pull away and extend its winning streak to eight. Ward registered two major decisions and a tech fall in his three victories, outscoring his opponents 41-3. Ramos had a pair of majors and narrowly missed a third, while Utley needed just 2:34 for a first period tech fall in his win over Edinboro's Chris Laird.
After an upset loss to Patricio Lugo of Edinboro in the first dual of the day, Henderson showed dominant form in a pair of first period pins. The redshirt senior stuck Columbia's Tyler Ponte in 2:15 before needing a mere 13 seconds to get the fall over Brown's Travis Vasquez, a pin that stands as the fastest of Henderson's All-American career. He now has 42 career pins, just eight shy of the school record of 50 set by T.J. Jaworsky.
Carolina had a good day at 197 pounds as well as Chip Ness and Scott Marmoll combined to go 3-0. Ness tallied a pair of decisions against Edinboro and Brown while Marmoll netted a bonus point with an 11-2 major over Columbia's Troy Hembury.
UNC will begin Atlantic Coast Conference competition on Saturday, Jan. 16, when the Tar Heels travel to Blacksburg to take on No. 5 Virginia Tech.
