Home Is Sweet For Tar Heels In Shutout Win
September 19, 2015 | Field Hockey
UNC got four goals from its three seniors – two from Nina Notman and one each from Casey Di Nardo and Emily Wold – and one from junior Lauren Moyer.
“I thought we showed a lot of composure tonight,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “The first half was a little bit of a chess match and in the second half it opened a little bit. Good to see the seniors lead the way for us.”
The Tar Heels are back in action on Sunday, hosting Miami (Ohio) at 2 p.m. at Henry Stadium. Field hockey play at Henry begins at 11 a.m., when Louisville faces off against No. 19 James Madison in a neutral-site matchup.
On Friday, neither team scored for the first 25 minutes of the game, then UNC exploded for three goals in the 10 minutes before halftime. In the 26th minute, on UNC's third penalty corner of the evening, Di Nardo positioned herself to the right of the cage to deflect Julia Young's ball from the top of the circle for her fourth goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Moyer made the score 2-0 on a cross from freshman Malin Evert. Moyer got the ball at the left of the cage and shot behind Louisville keeper Ayeisha McFerran. Moyer's goal was her second of the year.
In the 33rd minute, Wold tipped in a ball from junior Rachel Black to make the score 3-0 at halftime.
After halftime, Notman added two more goals. In the 52nd minute, she flicked in a shot on a penalty corner, one of two the Tar Heels drew in the second half. Young and sophomore Gab Major assisted on the play.
Ten minutes later, Notman scored again. She got a pass from Major at the top of the circle and ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the cage for her fifth goal of the year, putting the final score at 5-0.
Junior goalkeeper Shannon Johnson made two saves in the shutout, UNC's second of the year. Wold also helped preserve the clean slate, with a defensive save on a Louisville corner in the second half.
UNC outshot Louisville 15-8 and drew five corners to the Cardinals' three.
The game was the first of three in a row at home for the Tar Heels after opening with six games on the road. “I was really pleased with our crowd tonight,” Shelton said. “There's lots going on around campus tonight and I thought we had tremendous support from our home crowd.”
