April 3, 2015 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 19th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team earned its fourth ACC win of the season on Friday, sweeping Boston College 7-0 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the victory the Tar Heels improve to 15-8 (4-3 ACC), while the Eagles drop to 6-12 (0-7 ACC).
The Tar Heels grabbed a 1-0 lead in doubles by running away with matches on courts one and three.
On court one, Carolina's 27th-ranked pairing of Esben Hess-Olesen and Oystein Steiro earned its seventh win in dual-match play with a commanding 8-2 victory over Kyle Childree and Hank Workman. Minutes later, sophomores Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider secured the point for the Tar Heels by overwhelming Boston College's pair of Matt Wagner and Jeffrey Melvin 8-1 on court three.
Boosted by the return of sophomore Brayden Schnur, Carolina completed the sweep in singles action with six straight-set victories.
Freshman Robert Kelly, ranked 99th nationally, got on the board first by registering a 6-1, 6-2 defeat Kent Mukai on court five. Steiro followed up for Carolina by dismissing the Eagles' Will Turner 6-1, 6-1 on court six, and the 12th-ranked Schnur sealed the contest on court one by besting Philip Nelson 6-2, 6-0 in his first action since retiring against Minnesota on Feb. 28.
In the remaining matches, Murray topped the Kyle Childree 6-3, 6-0 on court four, 69th-ranked Brett Clark beat Aidan McNulty 6-3, 6-2 on court three, and Schneider wrapped up the festivities with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Hank Workman on court two.
“We had a very good week of practice, and it was good to have Brayden back in the lineup today,” said UNC head coach Sam Paul. “I thought he played pretty well.
"These guys have worked hard and played hard. They battled hard against Virginia Tech but just came up short. We learned a lot from that match, so I think we're ready for a final push."
Next up for Carolina is a visit from 35th-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday at noon. Admission is free.
