UNC Handles Campbell 4-1 In First Half Of Doubleheader

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 7 North Carolina men's tennis team defeated Campbell 4-1 on Wednesday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in the first half of a doubleheader. With the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 7-1 this spring, while the Fighting Camels fall to 1-3.
The injury-plagued Tar Heels snagged the doubles point with little issue despite an overhauled lineup. Junior Brett Clark and freshman Robert Kelly combined for Carolina's first doubles win on court two, defeating Nicolas Rakitin and Lukas Schaefer 6-0. The Tar Heel duo of junior Stuart DePaolo and sophomore Jack Murray clinched the point soon after on court three with a 6-0 shutout of Marthinus Visser and Landon Rogers.
On court one, Carolina's veteran duo of Esben Hess-Olesen and Oystein Steiro improved to 4-1 this dual-match spring with a 6-1 triumph over Campbell's Steven Billington and Jonathan O'Neal.
The Tar Heels finished off the Fighting Camels in singles play on courts one, three and four. Campbell did knot up the match briefly at 1-1 after Hess-Olesen retired on court two due to injury. However, Clark responded for Carolina with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over Billington. Murray then pushed UNC's lead to 3-1 on court three, cruising past Schaefer 7-5, 6-1.
Kelly sealed the Carolina victory at the No. 4 singles spot with a 7-6(2), 6-4 defeat of Campbell's Jonathan O'Neal. The freshman is now 3-0 in dual-match competition for his career.
The Tar Heels will face NC Central at 6:30 p.m. to complete Wednesday's doubleheader.
