Tar Heels Roll Howard To Open Season 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina's sixth-ranked men's tennis team blanked Howard 7-0 on Monday in the second half of a doubleheader at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The win moves the Tar Heels to 4-0 early in the dual-match season, which began on Friday.
The Tar Heels were given an early advantage when Howard was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches due to having only five active players.
Needing only one victory between the two doubles matches, Carolina's duo of freshman Robert Kelly and sophomore Ronnie Schneider delivered a 6-0 triumph over Howard's Myron Davis and Ismael Kaouache to clinch the point. Junior Connor Daly and redshirt junior Andrew Gores followed up with a 6-3 victory on court two.
Singles play yielded more positive results for the Tar Heels. Gores got on the board first, recording his first career dual-match singles win in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Hawkins Owens IV on court five. Kelly then secured victory for Carolina on court two, overwhelming William Jones III 6-2, 6-0.
In the remaining matches, junior Chad Hoskins joined Gores in registering his first career dual-match singles win by fending off the Bison's Laguna Foster, Jr. 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Schneider and junior Stuart DePaolo also added a singles victory for the Tar Heels on courts one and three, respectively.
The Tar Heels defeated UT-Chattanooga in the first half of Monday's doubleheader by an identical 7-0 score.
This marks the second straight season in which the Tar Heels have started at least 4-0. Carolina will be back in action on Friday against No. 44 Oregon as a part of ITA Kickoff Weekend. The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. In the preceding match at 10 a.m., Alabama will take on Virginia Tech.
