Tar Heels Prevail In Second Scrimmage On Dutch Trip
June 5, 2014 | Field Hockey
UTRECHT, Netherlands -- The North Carolina field hockey team started Thursday with a tour of historic Urtrech and a climb up all 465 steps to the top of the city's famous Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. By evening, however, the Tar Heels were all business, beating local club team S.V. Kampong 7-2 in a scrimmage game, the second of three that UNC will play during its 10-day tour of Holland. The first, on Sunday, was a 2-0 loss, which made Thursday's burst of offense even more welcome.
Junior Casey Di Nardo had a hat trick, and Loren Shealy, Abby Frey, Lauren Moyer and Emma Bozek rounded out the scoring. Bozek, who will celebrate her birthday on Friday, also had two assists, while Nina Notman and Tyler Powell had one each.
"I feel good about the progress we've made from Game 1 to Game 2," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We've learned a lot -- we've done some good video work and had some good practices -- and we played a much better game. It was good to see us score a bunch of goals, but I was particularly proud of our disciplined defense."
After the game, the Tar Heels had dinner with the Kampong team in its clubhouse, where World Cup field hockey -- Holland vs. New Zealand men -- was on a big screen TV as club members dined and socialized. "This trip is about so much more than playing field hockey," Shelton said. "We're experiencing another culture, and the Dutch approach field hockey in a more social way, even though they play at the highest level. It's a celebration of the sport -- to be in that clubhouse, with the Dutch playing New Zealand on TV while we're having dinner with the other team, it was just a really nice experience for all of us."
On Friday, the Tar Heels will return to the Hockey World Cup venue in The Hague to cheer on the U.S. women against China and also watch former Tar Heel player Illse Davids represent South Africa. On Saturday, the team will tour Amsterdam by bike and on Sunday the Tar Heels play their final scrimmage before returning home on Monday.
