Tar Heels Advance to ACC Semis With 4-0 Sweep of NC State

DURHAM, N.C. - The third-seeded North Carolina men's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded North Carolina State 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Men's Tennis Championships on Friday at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 23-4 on the season and will face off against second-seeded Duke in the semifinals on Saturday. NC State drops to 17-9 with the loss.

In doubles play, the Tar Heels were able to take down two ranked doubles pairs to clinch the point.

No. 35 Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark got Carolina on the board first, registering an 8-5 win over No. 22 Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge in lively match on court one. The Tar Heels' veteran pair of Nelson Vick and Oystein Steiro sealed the doubles point by edging the 60th-ranked duo of Nick Horton and Sean Weber, 8-7(7-4) in a tiebreaker on court two.

The match on court three was suspended after the point was clinched with Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray leading the Wolfpack's pair of Austin Powell and Simon Norenius, 7-4.

The Tar Heels finished off the Wolfpack with strong performances in singles action from Nelson Vick, Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark.

Vick pushed Carolina's lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six, and the freshman Schnur added another straight-set victory with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over the Wolfpack's Robbie Mudge on court one.

Sophomore Brett Clark clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a hard-earned 6-4, 7-5 victory on court three. The win marked Clark's 34th singles victory this season.

Friday turned into a long day for Sam Paul's team, as inclement weather forced all matches to be moved indoors at various sites. The Tar Heels eventually got underway at 7:45 p.m. in Durham despite originally being scheduled for 3 p.m. start in Cary.

Carolina will take on the Blue Devils at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Cary Tennis Park. The other semifinal will feature a matchup between top-seeded Virginia and fourth-seeded Notre Dame at 11 a.m.
