UNC Powers Past Bison To Improve To 4-0
January 21, 2014 | Men's Tennis
RICHMOND, VA. - North Carolina improved to 4-0 on the season In men's tennis action Monday evening as it defeated the Howard University Bison 7-0 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on the VCU campus.
The match finished off an excellent Monday for the Tar Heels, who defeated homestanding VCU (ranked 31st) earlier in the day 5-2. UNC starts the year 4-0 heading into a challenging pair of matches this weekend at the ITA Kick-Off event at Duke.
UNC clinched the match in a little over an hour. The Tar Heels earned the doubles point in decisive fashion, losing only one game in the process.
Carolina then went on to sweep the singles matches, losing only seven games in the process. Ronnie Schneider, Oystein Steiro, Nelson Vick, Jack Murray and Stuart DePaolo recorded straight set victories for the Tar Heels at the #1-#5 spots in the lineup and redshirt junior James Coxe closed it out for UNC with a win in an eight-game pro-set at the #6 spot in the lineup.
The match was played under the new experimental NCAA rules for non-conference matches. The new rules feature no-ad scoring in both singles and doubles, tiebreakers played at 5-5 in singles sets and in all doubles matches. Doubles matches are now played to just six points (previously eight).
This coming weekend, UNC will compete in the ITA Kick-Off Event at Duke with Saturday semifinal matches featuring the Blue Devils versus Oregon and the Tar Heels facing San Diego State. The Tar Heels will meet San Diego State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Duke will face Oregon at 4 p.m. The consolation match and ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship match will be played Sunday.
