CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 43rd-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels men's tennis team picked up their second win of the spring campaign with a dominant 7-0 win over Wofford College at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Friday.
North Carolina's talented group of freshmen played a big role in the victory, contributing to four of the seven total team points.
In doubles, freshman Brayden Schnur teamed up with sophomore Brett Clark at No. 1 doubles for a 6-2 win against Wofford's Rob Galloway and Haris Poric.
Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray, both freshmen, clinched the doubles point for the Tar Heels with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles spot.
North Carolina finished off the sweep of the Terriers by going a perfect 6-0 in singles play.
Brayden Schnur stepped in at No. 1 singles for Carolina and clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Wofford's Rob Galloway.
In the most dramatic match of the evening, 36th-ranked Brett Clark prevailed 6-2, 5-6, 1-0 (11-9) in a hard-fought match against Haris Poric. A 10-point tiebreak was played in lieu of a third set.
At No. 3 singles, 17th-ranked Ronnie Schneider made quick work of Wofford's Jackson Keith 6-2, 6-0.
Junior Oystein Steiro, freshman Jack Murray and sophomore Stuart DePaolo also claimed singles victories for the Tar Heels.
"We had three freshmen going out and playing in the lineup. You never know how they're going to handle a dual-match situation because it's different," said North Carolina head coach Sam Paul. "I thought they handled it really well. Overall it was a pretty good day."
The match against Wofford was the second of Friday's doubleheader. Carolina defeated East Carolina 7-0 in the first match of the day, which started at 2:30 p.m. Both matches were played under the ITA's experimental format.
The Tar Heels will be back on the courts again on Monday when they travel to face Virginia Commonwealth and Howard in a doubleheader. The matches will start at noon and 5 p.m., respectively, and both will be played at Virginia Commonwealth.
