2012 Carolina Classic Preview

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina volleyball team is set to host the 16th annual Carolina Classic Friday, Sept. 7, and Saturday, Sept. 8, at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels will host Louisiana State University, Middle Tennesee State, and Western Michigan.
All Carolina Classic tournament games are free and open to the public. North Carolina's game vs. LSU on Friday (7 p.m.) will be played on ESPN3.
Tournament Notes:
Last Meetings- This is the first meeting between UNC and Middle Tennessee St. The Tar Heels are 2-1 against Western Michigan, with their last meeting occuring in 2011, and 3-4 all-time against LSU, last facing the Tigers in 2010
North Carolina- The Tar Heels are 5-1 on the season, coming off a tournament victory at the Aggie Invitational, winning all three matches of the weekend. UNC's only loss came from No. 19 Kentucky at the Kentucky Classic. Senior Cora Harms is hitting a team-high .409, as sophomore Ece Taner is averaging 4.77 digs per set and freshman Paige Neuenfeldt has 1.67 blocks per set. Junior Kayla Berringer leads the team with 58 kills, averaging 2.64 per set.
Louisiana State- LSU was 1-2 in their own tournament, the Tiger Classic. Both of the Tigers' losses came to top-20 teams, No. 7 Purdue and No. 12 Washington. Senior Meghan Mannari has tallied double-digit digs in the Tigers' last five matches, averaging 4.44 digs per set. Freshman Khourtni Fears is averaging 1.22 blocks per set.
Middle Tennesee St.- The Blue Raiders (3-5) were 2-2 this past weekend at the Hokie Invitational. Freshman Chelsea Ross finished the weekend with two double-doubles, averaging 4.37 kills per set and hitting .312 for the weekend.
Western Michigan- Western Michigan (5-2) is also coming off a tournament win, sweeping all three games at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Invitational. The Broncos lead all MAC schools in kills, assists, and digs per set in 2012, with freshman Carolina Rose averaging 2.67 digs per set and Jessica Brown averaging 3.48 kills per set.
